Making Luffa Is Easy And It’s Now My New Favorite Scrub

All Natural Luffa

Luffa or loofah? Both are correct!

2021, mid November, we decided to plant sponge gourd, called patola in tagalog. We intended to sell the crops in the local market after harvest. Unfortunately, the variety of sponge gourd we planted was not known to our town. Thus, the crops were just left in the vine and wasn’t harvested at all until it became brown, old and matured. I then asked the caretaker to gather all matured patola and there I started making my all natural loofah scrub.

6 Easy Steps in Making Luffa:

Watch the actual process here.

1. Peel the dry sponge gourd.

Peeling a dry patola is very easy. You just have to squeeze its body a little and start peeling from cracks on its skin.

2. Take the seeds out.

Prepare a container where you can store the matured seeds so you can replant it anytime. This helps you lessen the cost of keeping your crops available all the time.

3. Clean the loofah.

Sanitize the skinless loofah by soaking it in a water and bleach mixture or hydrogen peroxide. This will help the residue to float and come off of the sponge.

4. Dry the loofah.

You can sun dry your loofah after cleaning it. This won’t take long if exposed to really bright sunlight and windy outdoors.

5. Cut the loofah.

Sizes and styles of loofah varies. If it’s just for personalize use, size don’t usually matter. On the other hand, it is highly recommended to cut loofah in same sizes if it is for commercial or business use.

6. Packaging.

Place your loofah in plastic containers to keep it clean and safe.

Freshly Packed Luffas

Now that you know how to make a loofah from natural ingredients, let us recall what are the benefits of using loofah scrub:

3 Main Benefits of Luffa:

1. Natural exfoliator.

Eliminating and avoiding harmful chemicals that may be contacted in synthetic scrubs.

2. Eco-friendly.

Even though loofah has the tendency to worn out earliest compared to other scrub, this little thing is biodegradable so it’s okay to replace anytime!

3. Affordable.

If ever you can’t plant your own patola, you can always buy them from a cheap price. A store from Shopee priced a piece for only Php 15.00

Promoting the use of natural loofah is not just supporting local producers but also taking part in saving the environment. Skip synthetic and go natural.
